These photos are created using a really slow shutter speed (at about twenty seconds) using a dark studio using intervals of light that flash on and off every 3-5 seconds. It creates the effect of movement and a element of transparency in the photos. I have noticed that if you stand in the same place for the entire shoot, the image of the subject becomes more solid. This is because you are allowing more light to hit in the same place, therefore creating the subjects strength more vivid.
